Columbia’s Arts Initiative, established by President Bollinger in 2004, encourages students, faculty, staff and alumni in all fields to generate, study and engage the creative life of the campus, the city and the wider world. Its founding director was award winning theater directorGregory Mosherwho established an eclectic mix of programs and events including a widely used free and reduced price ticket service that made the arts more accessible to members of the University community. This new alignment of Miller Theatre, the School of the Arts and the campus wide Arts Initiative, will advance the University’s goal of becoming a center for students, scholars and members of the general public in New York City interested in studying and experiencing the arts.

I remember several things about Dallas Raines from my time in Los Angeles: He and/or the marketing people at the station were constantly throwing out his credentials as a meteorologist, similar to the way that certain people from Cornell can’t go five minutes without mentioning their alma mater. While other weather people treat their segments like a piece of performance art, Raines walked into the party like he was walking onto a yacht.
But before long, such freeze frames disappeared, along with the cigars, Buicks and mojitos. The Berlin style rave was very real, not something I had imagined after too much Havana Club. Alongside it was crumbling, desperate infrastructure, and a country battered by isolation, where the cows were skinny and the streets more pothole than tarmac..
Some yearn, Norma Desmond like, for the days when celebrities were truly big. The veteran press agent Hugh Williams, who organises film premiere events for charity, says: “In the old days a premiere was like a dinner party. You knew a lot of people, you invited them and if the event sounded good, they’d come.
